Posted on 03/21/2017

Area VFW leaders visited Poplar Bluff Junior High on Thursday, March 9, to recognize social studies teacher Kathy Beck for being named the regional patriotic teacher of the year under the organization’s Citizenship Education program.

Beck, whose tenure with the R-I district began in 1990, was selected out of 16 VFW posts in Southeast Missouri for her innovative teaching and resource development methods in the 6-8 grade span.

“Kathy is a technology innovator using this tool in class to engage students at a higher depth of knowledge,” PBJHS Principal Bob Case wrote in Beck’s nomination letter. “She produces gallery walks, iMovies, and Keynote and PowerPoint presentations in most all lessons. Students are engaged in more than lecture and note taking.”

In addition to the faculty award, High School junior Wyatt Murphy won third place in the Voice of Democracy contest for his essay, which was themed ‘My Responsibility to America.’ Wyatt wrote about his intent to enlist in the United States Air Force following graduation.

“In my eyes, my responsibility to America is to repay her with time, dedication, and sweat and tears in the nation’s military,” Wyatt wrote. “…It may be a tough journey, but in the end, anything is worth doing if you are doing it out of sheer patriotism and devotion to the amazing nation you are proud to be a part of.”

In December, Beck along with Eugene Field Elementary teacher Mary Tolliver for grades K-5 and Technical Career Center cosmetology instructor Susan Chronister for grades 9-12 won the Citizenship Education contest within the VFW’s Poplar Bluff post. High School junior Adeesh Mishra also won second place in the Voice of Democracy essay contest at the local level.
